Footy Tipper 2025 – Round 17 Wrap

A classic to start the round. Heavyweights keep winning. The ‘Phins bring out the red pen (again) and perfect rounds wreak havoc.

All the heavyweights have ruled supreme this week. Starting with a defensive effort at CommBank Stadium on Thursday.

Panthers v Bulldogs

The difference. Nathan Cleary’s charge down try.

Premierships are built around defence and both teams showed they will run deep into September.

You can see the Panthers pedigree in the Cameron Ciraldo coached Bulldogs. This was low scoring but enthralling game.

Ultimately, it was the resurgent Panthers knocking the Bulldogs off the top of the ladder with a charge down try to Nathan Cleary being the difference.

Both teams deserved to win.

Raiders on Top

The coach’s son is in in again. Two tries in two weeks for Jed Stuart.

The Raiders are now officially leading the NRL competition for the first time in 12 years.

When I say, “official leading”, the Raiders have been the team to beat for weeks having won more games than any opposition team. The sooner they dump the gift two points for the bye the better.

Broncos and Storm Keep Winning

You can’t stop a Shibasaki! Trust me, the frame before shows the ball being grounded.

The other two heavyweights both recorded another win.

For the Broncos, it’s now a hattrick of victories while the Storm extend their winning streak to four (six if you include two byes).

There are now only two more weeks of Origin impact to these and other teams and then it’s into the home straight.

Spoon Bowls

It’s simple. On the line is out.

The Dragons and Cowboys return to the winners circle defeating the Eels and Titans respectively.

How high do you think Dragons fans blood pressure peaked on Saturday?

We supporters have witnessed too many capitulations this season. But I have to say, leading 26-6 at halftime I was feeling pretty confident.

But that 2nd half. The Eels showed without Mitch Moses they are a one trick pony.

Hit up 50 meters then bomb to Zac Lomax. Rinse and repeat.

For most of the half, this worked giving the visitors 70% possession. But ultimately, it was a touch judges call on a Foxx break and Zac forcing a pass that gifted Val Holmes an 80m try that was the difference.

Breath easy Dragons fans. We are now off to the nation’s capital to take on the high-flying Raiders.

In the other game, Cowboy fans must be frustrated. The Cows were easily the better team and looked like running away with the scoreline but kept inviting the Titans in with errors.

One try is all that seperated the two teams in the end.

In Other Games

The Hammer runs away with his fourth try.
  • How low was that 1st half between the Sea Eagles and Wests Tigers? Manly scoring right on halftime or it would have been nil-nil. The Stink ran away victors, as they should have, with no Jarome Luai and a revolving door of half backs (it seemed like everyone had a go).
  • The ‘Phins red penned another team scoring 50 points against the Rabbitohs. Congratulations to Dolphins star Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow who scored four tries in his 100th game.

The Standout

Unless you were the three Tipsters who thought the Bulldogs (get the Standout done early) or Eels were sure fire winners, you had a great round.

In fact, 48 Tipsters had great rounds.

Main Competition

gdadisho is our new leader with C.Y.L.C. back up in 2nd place. Both courtesy of perfect rounds.

Rossco the Pom and Wiley C hold onto 3rd and 4th places with Magnum and Panthers29 rounding off the prize money.

Last week’s Top 10 bouncer, Ad is nowhere to be seen with Runner now taking the poisoned chalice that is 10th position.

Second Competition

Starts this week so another reason to get those tips in.

And if that’s not reason enough, then how about…

Bart Simpson Weekly Jackpot

With eight clever tipsters selecting perfect round, the BSWJ keeps growing.

The Bart Simpson Weekly Jackpot now stands at B$150.

Don’t forget this week’s teams are minus their Origin stars when making your selections.

As always, good luck with your team and tipping this week.
