Close games and upsets. Just another typical round of NRL. Unless you tipped the Storm.
Battle of the Spoon
This week we again see the Spooners, well, umm, Spoon(?).
Starting with the Wests Tigers at the so-called 8th Wonder of the World (everyone knows that’s Henson Park). A crowd of 7,231 watched their team get beat 30-48 by the Cowboys.
While across the ditch, the Warriors have sold out every home game only to see the other Spooner, the Eels, win 30-20.
Doggies
And if you are going with crowd attendance, how good was Belmore! Yes, this is not a question.
The sea of Blue and White looked fantastic. The official crowd of 18,000 Doggie supporters and 110 Raiders dwarfs most of the other boutique stadiums.
Next weeks “real” local derby between the Dragons and Bulldogs at Kogarah will be a sell-out. Both teams are doing their fans proud.
Which brings us to…
The Upset of the Century
The Mighty Dragons have won their 1st game against the Storm, in Melbourne, this century.
And didn’t this hit our competition hard? (I will leave this to Pablo?!?)
The Dragons are the only team to have beaten both the Storm and Panthers at their home grounds this season. I am hearing whispers both teams would prefer to forfeit the finals if they have to face up against the Mighty Red V.
In Other Games
Stinky Manly played the Bye for a Nil-All draw.
Round 22 Results
Main Competition
The Big Red V’s sensational victory over the ladder leaders – Storm – caused some panic among OUR ladder leaders. Not to worry though, because 6 of the top 7 all had the Storm as their standout, basically negating any real movement among them.
So it’s still GeorgeTheDragon from The Creator from SMOG. Rossco the Pom remains in 4th place. Carlos moves up 2 places into 5th.
2nd Chance Competition
We have 3 new leaders. While the Dragons inspirational win over the Storm tricked many punters, in this comp it only costs you 2 differential points to the rest of the field. It was the big margins games that did the damage.
We have Stallion (1045) leading the way from Pablo (aka me – 1024). The 9986 a further 3 points behind on 1021 cumulative points.
The Standout
If you missed the matches on the weekend, the game you should watch a replay of is the Storm vs Dragons. If I still had a VHS recorder, I would tape this game for prosperity. It was a real sphincter clincher. As Rob mentioned, it was the Dragons first win against the Storm in Melbourne this century.
Anyway I waffle on (but allow me that indulgence cos I don’t get to gloat much lately). We had 36 punters get their standout wrong ! There were 34 backing the Storm! On the other side of the coin we had 18 tippers get their standout correct. 15 of those were on Penrifff.
- Standouts correct – 18
- Standouts wrong – 36
- The average score – 4.39
- Our round high – 8
- Our round low was – 2
Footy Tipper Weekly Jackpot
I may have mentioned that we did have some upsets on the weekend. The match of the season was clearly the mighty St George Dragons bringing down the might of the Melbourne Storm. It was pretty to watch. So what does that have to do with Jackpot ? Well, no one got it right (except 2 tippers). In fact our round high was only 8 points, so our prize pool jackpots to $130 for round 23.
NB – I still have some very deep emotional scars from the 1999 Grand Final.
Good luck with your tips this week.
