This round could be best surmised as the ladder leaders, wooden spooners and the rest.
Battle for the Spoon
Friday night saw both spoon contenders in Wests Tigers and Eels take on bigger opponents and the results were unsurprising.
The Warriors led all the way against the Tigers in front of a packed Auckland crowd. Leading 14-nil, the Warriors always like to invite the opposition back to keep the game exciting. Two Tigers tries was about as exciting as it got before the Wah’s ran away 28-16 victors.
The next game was at CommBank Stadium as the Eels hosted the Storm. Parra couldn’t take a trick gifting the Storm two tries off errors to trail 8-14 at halftime. This was despite the Eels leading all the stats. As poor as the Storm may have played, they were way too good to give this game up.
The Wests Tigers creep six points closer on for and against to trail the Eels by 58. Both teams sit on four wins with the Tigers guaranteed another two points with a bye.
We are looking at a grandstand finish as both teams play each other in the final round with one walking away with the dread woodenware.
Battle at the Top
The Storm’s win sees them two wins clear of the Panthers who were too classy against the Dragons at Wollongong. Things will go from bad to worse for the Dragons as they now travel to Melbourne to take on the Storm.
The Roosters finish up the top three with a high scoring 34-30 victory against the Sea Eagles. This should not have been a close game except the Roosters giving away three intercept tries.
The Sharkies round off the top four despite another loss against the Cowboys and have the Bulldogs nipping at their heels (er, fins).
Again, it could come down to the final round for the Sharks when the play the Sea Eagles for a potential Top 4 finish.
The Rest of the Pack
Only two points separates 5th placed Bulldogs (26 points) and 10th placed Dragons (24 points). The Knights and Warriors are two and three points further adrift. You can scratch everyone else from the finals.
Six rounds to go. Where are you on our competition ladders? Is it time to be daring and make a move?
Risk v Reward. Time is ticking.
