All eyes may be glued to the Origin decider, but we still had a round of football to review.
Get the red pen out because we can cross a couple more teams off the premiership contenders list.
Ben v Ben
The round started with the Bennett’s playing each other in the Dolphins and Bunnies.
I know Ben Hornby believes it’s disrespectful to state Wayne is coaching both teams. But we all know. We know Ben and Benny.
The ‘Phins were never really troubled in this game with a couple of late Souths tries flattering the scoreboard.
The recent bump from the resurgent Rabbitohs, trying to impress their old, and now returning coach, who coached against them this week, and their current interim coach who will be an assistant next year, (wait… what? I know it’s all so complicated) hides their main problem.
No Latrell, no finals football.
The red pen is out, and the Bunnies cannot make the finals.
Sharks Win
Friday saw the sliding Sharkies up against the Wests Tigers in the Shire.
And boy, didn’t the Tigers cement themselves as the worst team in the competition.
A record breaking 58-6 flogging beats their 56-14 flogging by the Dragons five weeks prior. Then add the 40 points conceded in each game the last two weeks.
The Sharks cling onto the all-important top four position.
Saturday Double Queensland Header
Saturday saw a double header of sorts at Robina and Suncorp.
The Titans had little trouble against the Eels. You can seriously flip a coin on either team with your tipping. No-one knows what team is playing.
Then we were off to BroncoVega$ to watch the Broncos v Dragons. Always an entertaining game, the Dragons raced to a 22-6 halftime lead and were good enough to withstand the Broncos 2nd half comeback.
The Broncos are just angry. From the dirt they carried on when scoring tries. Yes, it’s ‘Try July’, but pushing opponents in the head or spiking the ball at them when you score is not a post-try celebration. Then, throw in an angry coach at halftime, this team is done and dusted.
Six losses in a row means they cannot win the comp and, they can only afford one more loss or they will miss the finals entirely
The red pen is back out. Bye-bye Eels and Broncos.
Flog or Slog
The final game of the round was the Sea Eagles hosting the Knights at Brookvale.
I watched this game flying back from Brisbane. Yes, a clandestine trip to check out how much glass a Queenslander house is made of.
The truth is nobody really cares about what Manly is doing. The game was just too uninteresting, and I preferred to watch the flight map. Or the back of the seat in front of me.
There is no red pen here. I’m crossing off too many teams, someone has to make the finals.
Round 19 Results
Main Competition
There were no massive movers this week given there were only 5 matches, but GeorgeTheDragon has given one point back to the field and now only leads by 2 points from The Creator. Magnum and Rossco the Pom still hold down 3rd and 4th places respectively.
2nd Chance Competition
It’s only round 2 of 10 but our round 1 leaders (Lukebrooksbiggestfan and Adel Messih) have already been usurped. They dropped 42 and 38 places respectively – in just 1 round !!
Big Moose now leads the comp by 4 cumulative points from Mr Taylor. We then have 6 players set to pick up $5 each in equal 3rd place.
Needs to be said, there are 17 players within 10 points of the lead, so keeps putting your tips in. Quite literally ANYONE can win in this style of competition.
The Standout
Pretty good round for all punters this week and we did have 4 fullcards.
- Standouts correct – 46
- Standouts wrong – 7
- The average score – 5.02
- Our round high – 9 (fullcard)
- Our round low was – Minus 1
Well done to Big Moose, Craig Youngs Love Child, Yakkas and Krusty for getting them all correct.
Footy Tipper Weekly Jackpot
No single winners last weekend so we are now playing for $100 for round 20.
Good luck with your tips this week.
