Footy Tipper 2024 – Round 18 Wrap

Jared Waerea-Hargreaves

Congratulations Jared Waerea-Hargreaves for breaking the record of most games for the Roosters. 307 and counting. Do we celebrate every game?

Words cannot describe this achievement. A warrior, suspension, front-row forward, sin-bin, international

JWH has done it all and in this momentous game he did again with another spell in the sin-bin for a high shot. I have said this before and will say it again, any NRL supporter would want JWH in their team.

Heavyweights Win

The JWH Roosters joined the Storm and Panthers to highlight how far ahead these teams are to the rest of the field.

Dragon fans will find it hard to remember their team were trailing 14-12 with 30 minutes to go. It’s seemed so long ago. The Roosters’ defense was pivotal to their victory before their attack clicked into gear. It is the start of a tough month of football for the Dragons as they take on the Broncos, Panthers and Storm.

An enthusiastic Wests Tigers team could not prevent being mowed down by the Storm after leading 12-6.

And the Panthers ground out a win against former premiership contenders the Broncos at Suncorp.

All three teams sit on top of the NRL ladder. The Storm and Panthers are minus their main players Cam Munster and Nathan Cleary, but the Roosters, despite being 3rd, are the team to beat with 100 points more differential points.

Golden Days

Two golden point games this round to torment Tipsters and both on Super Saturday.

The Doggies pipped the Warriors with another Matt Burton field goal ricocheting off the upright. Mind you, Burton had another attempt bounce the other way and a long-range kick fall short of the crossbar. I tipped the Dogs but was cheering on the Warriors. Who doesn’t like the Wahs?

Up in Townsville, Scott Drinkwater potted a 2 point field goal in the dying minutes of regulation time to take the match to golden point. It felt like every player in the team had an attempt for the Cows and missed. Hint, pass it to Drinky!

Perennial villain and former acrobat DCE needed no such invitation as he booted stinky Manly to a win. It is ironic for Queenslanders to suffer this as DCE and Ben Hunt plot to break the hearts of the nation next Wednesday week.

Ben Hornby – Coach of the Year?

What a miraculous turnaround interim coach Ben Hornby has done with the Rabbitohs winning five games on the trot and putting the team back into semi-final contention.

All the players that looked unfit and disinterested at the start of the season are now firing with Latrell Mitchell in career best form. This team should never have been languishing at the bottom of the ladder.

But surely, this has nothing to do with supercoach Wayne Bennetts’ return to the burrow next year?

Surely, the players already had enough pride and motivation to compete for their previous coach JD?

Good luck Horns! This could be very interesting if the Bunnies continue their winning ways.

In Other Games

  • The Sharks continue their slide down the ladder with a loss to the Titans. This was a Sharkies home game hosted at Coffs Harbour which is about 250kms closer for Titans fans to travel.
  • The Knights beat the Raiders in Canberra. I wonder what Ricky has to say? Yawn!
