Heavyweights to the Top
It was a round where many of the heavyweights hit their strides with the current top 6 all victors this round.
The Storm grinded another close win against the Roosters in an exciting match where the score was 12-12 until the final minutes. The Storm’s five wins and one loss this season have all been by 8 points or less. They just keep finding ways to win.
The Panthers have returned to the Top Four with a win over the Wests Tigers in Bathurst. They are team yet to fully flex the Premiership muscle. Despite the Tigers scoring early, and unlucky not to have marched out to a bigger lead, Penrith just have too much salary cap class.
Queensland Ambush
The Dolphins and Broncos scored some amazing tries in a burst that decimated their opposition.
In the stifling heat of Darwin, the Dolphins came back from an 8-4 halftime deficit against the Eels to score eight unanswered tries in 25 minutes.
Then, in the pouring Brisbane rain, The Broncos ran away against the Raiders to lead 28-0 after a five try burst in 19 minutes. The Raiders outscored the Broncs two tries to one in the 2nd half that gave Coach Ricky Stuart some positives. But the Broncos missed so many opportunities including dropped balls and a couple intercepts.
Considering the highflying Cowboys were heralded as the premier Queensland team only weeks ago, what happened to them? Smashed 42-6 by the Sharks.
The Cowboys are the imposters holding onto 8th spot.
Titans v Sea Eagles
What an exciting match. You couldn’t look away without missing a change in the score with the lead changing on seven occasions.
The Titans scored enough points to win any game. Just not this one.
The turning point was the five-minute period either side of halftime where the Sea Eagles scored twice. When I say that was the turning point, the Titans regained the lead 10 minutes later before forfeiting it again in Manly’s next set of six.
With 14 minutes remaining everyone was glued to the game waiting for the next score. But it never came.
Manly win 34-30 and the Titans anchor the bottom of the premiership ladder still searching for their first win.
In Other Games
Two of last season’s cellar dwellers notched up their fourth and third win respectively:
- The Dragons were way too good and easily beat the Warriors, who must be concerned with their inconsistent form this season. The Warriors should be placing in the Top Eight.
- The Bulldogs ran in six tries to two and in total control in their big win over the Knights. All talk was the final few minutes. What happened to “what happens on the field stays on the field”?
