What a round? A draw, almost another, and close games to torment Tipsters.
Get Out Of Jail Gaol Card
How many games could have gone either way this round?
Knights v Roosters
We started with the Knights hosting the Roosters trailing 22-14 with five remaining.
A try to Dane Gagai was the start. A long range break by Kayln Ponga, held down by unpunished Roosters gamesmanship (i.e. cheating) prevented a potential golden point finish.
But that’s the Roosters way.
Storm v Bulldogs
Next up, we watched the much favoured Storm take on the Bulldogs. Leading 10-Nil at the break the Storm watched Josh Addo-Carr cross, cross and cross to take the Bulldogs to a 14-10 lead with 5 remaining.
Many Tipsters could take a sigh of relief after the Stormers scored in the final five.
Warriors v Sea Eagles
Saturday we were in Warriors land as they took on the Sea Eagles. This was always going to be an interesting match. Manly held an eight point lead with a minute remaining to see the Warriors force the game into Golden Point. Thanks mainly to a penalty after the siren for dangerous contact on Shaun Johnson’s missed two point field goal attempt. More on this later this week.
The missed field goal was a theme throughout golden point. Nobody could kick one. First draw of the season.
Raiders v Titans
The final match of the round was down at the nations capital where the Raiders faced off against the all-beatable Titans. I will give credit to the Titans, they somehow stayed in contention during the match. The Raiders led 20-10 with five to go before the Titans forced the game to golden point.
And the Titans should have won this game.
But, when all looked set for the first double draw since 2001, Xavier Savage made a massive break for Jamal Fogarty to kick the winning goal for the Raiders.
Battle Of the Spoon
Every season, the Dragons coach is favourite to be the first sacked.
Every season, the Dragons are favourite for the spoon.
Except this never happens.
The battle of last season’s cellar dwellers showed how much difference there is between the Dragons and Wests Tigers. Despite the Tigers wins over the Sharks and Eels, plus inflating their ladder position with the bye, the spoon favourites easily passed the mantle back to the Tigers.
In Other Games
- The Broncos dominated in the local derby against the Dolphins.
- The Eels and Cows continue to confuse Tipsters. Both teams are rocks and diamonds.
- The Rabbitohs gave their coach a much-needed reprieve despite losing to the Sharks. I am so happy about this.
