Round 3 is now complete, and we have one undefeated team sitting pretty, while two others are yet to score a victory.
And in our competition, we have a completely new set of leaders.
Here are the main games.
Grand Final Rematch
The round kicked off with the Panthers v Broncos in Penrith. The Panthers finally flexed their muscles with a dominate performance in the GF rematch. The ‘Grand Final Rematch’ were three words banned by Coach Kevvie and the Broncos team. It is early days, but the Panthers are rightly favourites to take out their 4th consecutive premiership.
Book of Feuds / JWH 300
Congratulations to Jared Waerea-Hargreaves on his 300th match. The Roosters didn’t disappoint with an emphatic win against their bitter local rivals.
What makes JWH’s 300 more impressive is he has done this as a front row forward. Jared can be a bit polarising and plays tough football. Love him or hate him, every fan would want him in their team. Jared is now closing in on Mitch Aubusson’s record of 306 games as the most capped Rooster.
He’d already be there if it weren’t for all the suspensions.
Suburbia Saturday
Super Saturday went to the local grounds with matches at Belmore, Kogarah and Leichhardt. How good was that!
Local grounds are what makes the game tribal and the NRL knows this. They have been canvasing the state government to fund these grounds.
We started with the Bulldogs annihilating the Titans 32-0 at Belmore. The Bulldogs have spent years trying to find the ‘Dogs of War’ spirit from the 1980’s with much talk about the Bulldog’s DNA. It turns out, you just had to buy the players from other teams.
The Bulldogs play at Belmore Sports Ground a couple times a season against out-of-town teams. This ground is tiny. Maybe the government could look at adding a stand at the railway end while the train lines are shut for Metro?
Next was the first Dragons home game at Kogarah Jubilee Stadium. The Dragons would be ruing the dropped ball by Raymond Faitala-Mariner that would have given them a 24-4 lead over the Cowboys. The Cows returned serve with seven unanswered tries. The Cowboys lead the competition and look the real deal in 2024,
The final tour of Sydney was to Leichhardt Oval where a packed crowd watched the Tigers runaway big victors over the Sharks 32-6.
I noticed the Daily Telegraph’s Brent Read went to town over the ground’s status and relevance. In a room filled with sensible people, there is always one.
He should try telling that to the players and fans.
In other games, how entertaining was the Eels v Sea Eagles match! Fans of both clubs have a lot to cheer about this season.
The Warriors and Knights also join the Bulldogs and Wests Tigers with their first wins of the season.
