Round 15 saw big wins to both the Storm (who demoralised the Sharkies) 54 to 10, and to Stinky Manly (who destroyed the Dolphins) 58 to 18. The Storms win sees them lock in third place on the competition ladder and relegating the Shark to 5th. The Sea Eagles win sees them move into the top 8 on 17 points – one point clear of the Eels.
Punters will be disappointed by the two upsets of the round;
The Warriors ruined Jarrod Crokers 300th NRL game (party) in Canberra (in front of a big Raiders home crowd) prevailing 36 to 14. The after match interview with Ricky was (I thought) an interesting one. He reckoned the Canberra boys over-tried to make Jarrod’s milestone a memorable one, and that they forgot how to play football in patches. A great comment was “…sometimes your effort overcomes your smarts”. No denying, they had several opportunities to take the game away from the Warriors however it was not to be. The win sees the Warriors leap frog the Raiders on the competition ladder and they now sit in 5th place on for and against.
The biggest upset of the round was the Dragons beating a depleted Rabbits outfit 36 -30 in front of a lockout capacity crowd at Jubilee Oval. In a real sphincter clincher for Saint George fans, the big red V managed to hold off a last ditched onslaught by the Bunnies. The final 20 minutes of the match saw six tries – 3 to the Dragons to take them to a seemingly insurmountable 36 – 14 lead with 6.5 minutes to play. Unbelievably the rabbits managed to run in three tries in that last 6 minutes to only fall agonisingly short. I had to pry my butt cheeks open with a crowbar after that. Saints fans, for the first time this season can actually thank the boot of Zac Lomax who fortunately managed 6 from 7. Souths stand-in kicker Blake Taaffe only managed 3 from 6.
