Round 14 saw some great footy with several of the games going right to the death.
The Tigers will feel let down with their 1 point loss to the Raiders 20 – 19. It was a Queenslandesque comeback from 18 – nil down with 12mins to play. It all looked done and dusted – well I stopped watching anyway. When the Raiders lost Starling to the bin, Wests changed gears and ran in those 3 tries to have it all square. The flurry in those final 5 minutes was exhilarating – the Wests field goal, then subsequent penalty goal to the Raiders, and the final play (that seemingly went on for minutes). Great footy. Cellar dwellers against true competition contenders.
The Roosters barely overcame the Bulldogs in their clash too – 25 – 24 – with the winning field goal coming in the last 5 minutes of play. The Dogs should also feel that they let one get away from them, as I think a victory would have been a fair result for their efforts. The talk of Teddy “silencing his critics” for his lacklustre performance in SOO1 are ludicrous. Playing against the 15th placed Dogs, you would expect him to excel. I’m not exactly a critic of his but that performance shouldn’t be the sole decider on whether he keeps his jersey for game 2.
Penrith assume the lead of the NRL comp on 20 points after their win over the Dragons 26 – 18. As one of Saints harshest critics, I think it was a game that they could have actually won had a few poor choices and decisions gone in their favour. There is still a slither of pride in the Big Red V. The big news from the match was of course Nathan Cleary’s hammy injury. Fair dinkum, I reckon it made global headlines. It’s not a biggie for the Blues (in fact it may be a blessing) …. its not like NSW are short on halfbacks?
