Footy Tipper 2023 – Round 2 Wrap

Tipping should be easy right? So what the hell is going on ?

Eels and Raiders both 0 – 2. Then there is the newbies, the Dolphins, 2 – 0 the only undefeated team.

Put it down to rustiness maybe. The NRL front-runners frankly look flat and out of sync. It’s far to early to hit the panic button though.

The highly favoured Eels team battled hard, but let the Sharks in by gifting them a couple of soft tries. 5 tries each tells the tale. It was a tight match, and the Sharks are rightly happy taking the 2 points particularly from the Parra faithful and CommBank Stadium. That’s 2 straight home defeats for the Eels.

So, the round 1 win over the Roosters wasn’t a fluke for the Dolphins. They showed plenty of guts and determination in their 20 – 14 win over the Raiders at sodden (understatement) home in Redcliffe. They were down 12 – 0 just before half-time, but managed to score their opening try just  before the siren. Their defence on the try line in a 20-25minute patch in the 2nd half was outstanding. With scores level at 14 all with 6 minutes to play, golden point looked like a certainty. Then in the 77th minute Tabuai-Fidow crossed for his 2nd and ultimately match sealing try. Even Ricky Stuart (surprisingly calm) in the post-match interview acknowledged the Dolphins efforts. YES – Ricky !!

The team that most impressed me most though, was the Bulldogs (yes – even over the magnificent efforts of the Mighty Big Red V Dragons who walked all over the Titans). Their efforts against the Storm (in Mexico no less) was extremely impressive. They were entertaining. They looked like the Berries of the 70’s giving the ball plenty of air and ending with a tally of 5 tries to 2. They well and truly deserved their 26 – 12 win (even though the neigh sayers may say it was against a weakened Storm outfit).

Blake Lawrie crosses for yet another try in his illustrious career with the Dragons. This maintains his 100% record – when he scores, St George go on to win the match. He doubled his try scoring tally with this effort at Kogarah – Two tries in 2199 days of professional footy. Remarkable!!

I’m not going into any detail and want to avoid politics at all costs, but it would be remiss of me not to say – racial vilification has absolutely no place in on our society – not just the NRL. What happened on Thursday night at Penrith was unfortunate and should not be tolerated.

Here are all the results from round 2 ;

Main Competition

Chunka assumes the lead from MB by virtue of a 6 point differential. (both on 13 points) MLC slides down to 3rd place with a small differential lead over Splinter.

The only good news is – everyone is tipping so badly, that NO ONE is really to far from the lead.

The Standout

Looks like it’s going to be a tough season. The numbers improved slightly on last week, but it’s still pretty ordinary;

  • Standouts correct – 29
  • Standouts wrong – 34
  • The average score –  3.63
  • Our round high – 8 achieved by 2 punters – UpthePamfers and TheZipZipMan
  • Our round low was – Minus 1

The Curse of the Standout. Did you know – To date we have had only 37 correct Standouts selected. While 118 selections have been WRONG.

Footy Tipper Weekly Jackpot

Not even close so the pool increases to $30.00 for round 3.

Good luck with your tips this week.
