Round 12 saw the NRL celebrate Indigenous Round. The aim is to highlight significant social issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is also an opportunity for the game to cement a commitment to the Indigenous community and celebrate the unique relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and rugby league.
Souths made hard work of their win over the Tigers coming back from an 18 – 12 deficit at half time. They Stormed home with 6 unanswered tries in the final 40 minutes to claim the points 44 – 18. Fittingly for Indigenous round, the masterminds of the comeback were Alex Johnston (3 tries new club try scoring record) and Cody Walker (2 tries).
The Dragons spoiled the Bulldogs homecoming party to Belmore with a 34 – 24 victory. A capacity crowd of just shy of 17,000 fans were treated to plenty of highs and lows during the 80 minutes of the local derby. Dragons fans were treated to 3 quick tries in the first half and went into the sheds 16 – 6 up. The Doggies, as they shown all season, responded with 3 of their own in the 2nd half narrowing the gap and staying in the hunt. But as has been their trend all season they were unable to see out the 80 minutes conceding 2 late tries in the 62nd and 74th minutes.
