Weekend Review

Round 1 is done and dusted and it was great to see the NRL back in front of home crowds in all states. But what a bizarre round of football.

It is only Round 1.

There were two outstanding teams this weekend being the Panthers and Storm. But there were disappointing genuine premiership contenders that couldn’t hit a barn with a fistful of wheat

  • The Panthers (minus half Nathan Cleary) were in total control over the Sea Eagles. Manly’s only highlight was a try before halftime. Once again, the Sea Eagles have been shown to be a one trick pony team. Shutdown Tommy Turbo and that is it.
  • The Storm showed their class against a West Tigers side that put out some insane stats in the 1st half. Trailing by 10 points in the 2nd half, you knew the Storm were going to upset Wests Tigers supporters. And they did once Jahrome Hughes and Ryan Papenhuyzen injected themselves in the game. Tigers supporters will take some confidence out of this game with a very slick looking backline and with Jackson Hastings experience and leadership.
  • The Rabbitohs were dreadful against the Broncos. Heavily backed, the Rabbitohs showed very little. Broncos supporters will be very happy with the tenacity of their side in what was really a one-sided encounter.
  • If the Rabbitohs were unimpressive, well then there were the Roosters. A full strength heavyweight of the competition showed next to nothing against a Knights team they were expected to beat. Just ask the 22 Tipsters who lost 2 points as Standouts.

The Roosters and Rabbitohs have the same problem. The halves don’t know how to play with each other. The attack was non-existent in both teams. It will take a few rounds.

Remember, it’s only Round 1.

In other games…

  • Close wins by the Raiders over the Sharks and Parra over Titans show why these four teams will challenge for the top eight positions. Both games were exciting, highly skilled and with some attacking flair.
  • The Dragons ran out winners against the Warriors in what was the most bizarre game of the opening round. Both teams gifted each other opportunities and the kicking game with the breeze was amazing. The Dragons found touch 10m out of the Warriors line from a penalty kick 25m out from their own. Both teams would have cricket sores run up against any other team.
  • The Bulldogs’ 6-4 victory over the Cowboys. The score says it all. Both will not feature in the finals

Again, it is only Round 1.

The Standout and Weekend Stats

Well, it took just one round to see a sole tipster score a perfect round. Embarrassingly, it was the 10+ year old algorithm, Footy Tipper. So, technically it doesn’t count. Tipper is only here to recommend on the Tipsheet and shame all people below it.

  • 47 got it right
  • 27 got it wrong
  • Our round high was 9
  • Our round low was 0 (damn you Standout!!)
  • Average score was a low 3.8

Main Competition – Ladder Leader(s)
