So the big news of the round was Boyd Cordner’s decision to announce his early retirement from the NRL due to his concerns over on-going head knock issues. Originally I was going to make light of the decision until I listened to the full interview at his conference. It was difficult to listen too – full of emotion and clearly a decision not made on the spur of the moment. I’m not a fan of the NRL’s current stance and policy with regard to protecting the players head – NOT because I enjoy the biff – but because it IS a tough sport, with tough players who know and understand the risks. The NRL does have a duty of care to keep the welfare of the players safe. But I 100% respect Cordner’s decision to leave the game due to his own personal health concerns.
It is also untrue that he is set to join up with Paul Gallen and commence a new career in the boxing ring. (OK …….I couldn’t help myself but to get that one in).
Saints fans are calling on the Board for the immediate reinstatement of Paul Mary McGregor to the coaching position after their team suffered yet another humiliating loss on the weekend – this time at the hand of the Doggies 28 – 6. Now frankly that’s a pretty big call, because he was CR_P ! There are also 6 of our tippers pretty upset with the result, as the loss cost them a fullcard and maximum points.
The other HUGE upset of the round saw the Penrifff Panthers go down to the Sharks at Netstrata Jubilee Okee Dokey Stadium. It may only have been virtue of a 78th minute field goal to Shaun Johnson to seal the match 19 – 18, but it also marked the 2nd consecutive week that they lost games they should have won. They now sit in 2nd place behind the Storm on the leaderboard – the first time they have not led the comp since round 3. Did they suffer having 7 players figure in SOOI ? ….probably. Does it then indicate that there isn’t a lot of depth in their ranks ? … possibly. Or Is it the start of the slide ? ….probably not. But I do know that punters will be thinking twice before having them as their standout in the coming weeks.
