Footy Tipper 2021 – Round 5 Wrap

Cut-off Times for this week…

Thursday 15th April 2021 – Broncos vs Panthers 7:50pm AEST

Tips will not be accepted after this time.

It was a very sad week for the entire NRL community after hearing of the passing of Tommy Raudonikis. Everyone by now will have read of his achievements as a Magpie, a Jet, a Cockroach, a Kangaroo, a Tiger and played for Brothers in Qld, so I wont harp on. But one particular memory for me stands out. It occurred in a Test match against England. A scrum had erupted into a full on brawl, and I recall a very young Craig Young going toe to toe with the opposing English prop. Tommy took refuge behind Youngie while the punches were flying. But at every opportunity to get involved in the melee, Tom threw his own series of right hooks at the same pommy prop from the safety of Craig Youngs back.  Vale Tommy.

Three upset results spoiled the party for most tippers last weekend ;

It’s not a “spot the ball” competition – it is the moment Manly supporters have been waiting for ….for the last 5 weeks. A victory !!

Manly broke their drought by overcoming the Warriors in a tight match by 13 – 12 with a 79th minute field goal to DCE. Only 9 tippers picked the Silvertails to win. The win sees them move up the ladder into the lofty heights of 15th place. They also improved their for and against record by 1 point. Jubilant scenes erupted after the field goal when the entire team piled onto DCE on the ground, with scenes reminiscent of an ancient Roman orgy.

It was an emotional day for players and spectators alike as they farewelled Tom Raudonikis at Leichhardt Oval. Cellar dwellers, the Cowboys, got away to a 28 – 6 half time lead over the Tigers and looked like they had it in the bag. After a towelling at half time, (and with the jeering from their own supporters) the Tigers came out and showed some spirit, putting on 24 points in the final 28 minutes. This was still not enough to erase the half time deficit and the Cows went on to score their first win for the season 34 – 30. Only 3 punters got this one right.

The last upset of the round came last night when the Dragons outclassed the previously undefeated Eels to the tune of 26 – 12. Hitting the line hard and with some good scrambling defence saw the Dragons go into the sheds with an 18 – nil lead. The Eels took advantage of an error riddled 2nd half from Saints to keep themselves in with a shot. A try to Matt Dufty in the 70th minute was enough to see the Dragons take their 4th straight win.

In other games ;

The Rabbitohs comfortably defeated the Broncos 35 – 6 at Stadium Australia. History was made Adam Reynolds kicking the first ever two point field goal.

The Panthers are now the only undefeated team in the comp after they easily accounted for the Raiders 30 – 10 at home in front of almost 21K fans.

The Titans easily accounted for the decimated Knights outfit 42 – 16. A tally of 8 tries to 3 tells the tale. The Titans will soon take on the mantle of the razzle dazzle team (if not already). In those 8 tries we saw a hat-trick to David Fifita, and doubles to Patrick Herbert and Corey Thompson.

The Storm annihilated the Bulldogs 52 – 18. A total of 9 Storm players got their name on the score sheet in the demolition of the Doggies. Small consolation for the Dogs is that they did actually score their first points since round 1.

The Roosters beat the Sharks 26 – 18. Leading 18 – 4 with 28 minutes to play, the Sharkies choked allowing the Chooks to score 22 points in the last 19 minutes of play. Not helped by injuries to key players Wade Graham and Josh Dugan (and another impressive performance from replacement Roosters halfback Sam Walker, were key factors in the stunning Roosters comeback. PS – Brett Morris helped himself to another 2 tries bringing his season tally to 11.

The Standout

  • 68 – got it right.
  • 3 – got it wrong (all of these thought the Eels were a certainty over the Dragons)
  • The average score – 6.89
  • Our round high was 9 – well done to Gerehu3B who was the only person to manage this feat.
  • Our round low was 3
