Footy Tipper 2020 – Round 14 Wrap

Cut-off Times for this week…

Thursday 20th August 2020 – Eels vs Storm 7:50pm AEST

Tips will not be accepted after this time.

A weekend of nail biters and tight finishes.

  • Souths got out of jail against the Cowboys. The Cowboys lead the match 30 – 24 after a late try to Tom Opacic in the 73rd minute. The Bunnies then scored the next 7 points – a late try (75th minute), a penalty goal in the 77th minute and a field goal with 1 minute to play ! The win solids up their place in the top 8 with a 4 point gap to 9th place.
  • Similarly, the West Tigers staged a late 7 point comeback to inch out the Bulldogs. A converted try in the 72nd minute and a field goal with 3 to play saw them prevail by 29 – 28
  • It’s all about late tries… the Knights scraped home with a converted try in the 72nd minute to inch out Stinky Manly 26 – 24
  • The Dragons farewelled Mary McGregor with an inspirational win over the Eels 14 – 12. Penalty goals to Zac Lomax in the 58th and 65th minute was just enough to see them get home. Some last minute bravado from Saints wingers Ravalawa (you don’t treat me no good no more) and Pereira in their own in goal area staved off a late surge from the Eels.

In other matches ;

  • Melbourne won the war over the Cheating Chooks 24 – 6. The casualty ward was massive for the Roosters who lost halfback Lachlan Lam (syndesmosis – an immovable joint in which bones are joined by connective tissue) and back-rower Mitch Aubusson (suspected  distal radius fracture aka a broken wrist) in the first half. Then they lost star playmaker Luke Keary (ribs – aka a boo boo in the tum tum) in the second. SBW is currently in quarantine pending his return to the NRL. Will that be enough to seal the “3peat” for the tri-colours ? Their stocks are diminishing weekly ?
  • The Penrith liquorice allsorts edged out a valiant Warriors outfit 18 – 12. The win, their 9th straight, marks a new club record for the Panthers.
  • The Sharkies kept their finals hopes alive with a 30 – 18 win over the Titans. The Sharks showed plenty of bite, but the Titans showed more with Kevin Proctor being sent off for having a munch on Sean Johnsons forearm.
  • The Raiders rolled the Broncos 36 – 8. No surprise there.

The Standout

50 – got it right.

19 – got it wrong (18 of these were on the Eels to do the Dragons … myself included).

The average score – 6.8

Main Competition – Ladder Leaders

One of the most memorable chokes of all time. 1996 US Masters.

Still – Mary McGregor ……but the slide continues. The lead is now a mere 2 points from Robbie’s Back (think about it…. that’s just one wrong standout !) His lead has now diminished from 5 to 3 to 2 in the last 3 rounds. And it’s not over yet. 6 rounds to go.

Historical leaders

Aaron C and Chur_moi (Round 1)

Big Papi Productions (Round 4)

2nd Chance Competition – Ladder Leaders

We have an outright leader – BigBadBenji on 837 points. Her lead is a mere 4 point over Robbie’s Back on 833.  Be sure to check out our article “In the Spotlight”

A reminder, your score is based on what each of your selected teams score (win or lose). The sum total of the 8 games determines your overall score.
