Phillip Ronald Gould AM, or Gus, has done it all.
A player, coach, commentator, journalist, administrator, player agent, Order of Australia. Everything but running the game… officially.
The Player
Gus debuted in the Panthers lower grades in 1976 before becoming captain of the first grade team in 1979 at the age of 20 years.
Gus played for four clubs. Including the Grand Final loss for Newtown against Parramatta in 1981 (20-11) and then the Grand Final Qualifier loss for the Bulldogs two years later, again the Eels (18-4).
He did not play in the Grand Final wins by the Bulldogs in 1984 due to injury and 1985 as he captain the reserve grade team.
The Coach
Gus had more success in his coaching career winning titles with the Bulldogs in 1988 and Panthers in 1991. He was also the Coaching Director (puppet master) of the Roosters when Ricky Stuart coached the team to win the 2002 competition.
Gus is also the only coach I know that has been sent off when he was with the Panthers in 1994.
His State of Origin record is second to none (if we forget about Mal).
Coaching the Blues in two stints for a record of six series wins, one drawn series, and one series loss.
