Robert ‘Bozo’ Fulton was a legendary player, coach, media commentator and selector. Plucked from Wests in the Illawarra competition, Bozo won three premierships for Manly, where he was their all-time leading try scorer, and ended his career at the Roosters as Captain/Coach. Bozo also had an off-season stint at his birth town of Warrington UK.
As a coach, his Club winning percentage of 64.4% is right up there with modern coaching goliaths Craig Bellamy (69.6%) and Trent Robinson (64.7). Higher than Wayne Bennett’s 62.0%.
As Australian coach his win percentage was a whopping 82%.
I never did see Bozo as a player. The first Rugby League match I was allowed to watch was the 1979 Grand Final on TV. Bozo had already completed his Mad Monday duties with Easts, retiring with a chronic knee injury.
I did enjoy watching him as a coach and listening to his radio commentary and high jinx in his post playing days.
I do know that in an era where players trained twice a week, Bozo continued training daily as he was doing when he was conscripted into the army. Gifted, determined and the fittest player to lace up the boots in that era.
Pablo has more to say about Bozo in his Weekly Wrap below:
